"Institutions and Subjects of Neoliberalism: The Case of "Competition" in Turkey"

In this talk I analyze "competition" as a site, which can shed light on the two levels that neoliberalism operates and shapes. Tracing the parallel stories of the institutionalization of competition laws in Turkey and the cultivation of competition as a novel individual ethic, I offer a broad mapping of Turkish neoliberalism by focusing on the connections between the individual (subjectivity) and macro political (institution building) levels. Such bridging, I argue, is necessary for an accurate understanding of neoliberalism, in Turkey and elsewhere.
