Lecture From Ph.D. Tülin Erdem:
"Brands: Opiate of the Non-Religious Masses?"

Ph.D. Tülin Erdem, Professor at the Stern School of Business, New York University and the first female editor of "Journal of Marketing Research" published by American Marketing Association (AMA) will be giving a lecture entitled "Brands: Opiate of the Non-Religious Masses?" at Özyeğin University on December 26 at 15:00.

The research entitled "Brands: Opiate of the Non-Religious Masses?" conducted by Tülin Erdem, Ron Shachar, Gavan J. Fitzsimons and Keisha M. Cutright aims to understand whether or not there is a significant relationship between consumers' religiosity and their reliance on brand name products (i.e. the degree to which they prefer branded goods over non-branded goods) based on implied associations between brands and religion.

The research examines the relationship between religiosity and brand reliance using,
  • Data sets on Americans at the state level, county level and individual level,
  • Various measures of religiosity and various measures of brand reliance, and
  • Three three different empirical approaches (field, survey and experimental)
The results derived across these different data sets, measures and methods suggest that non-religious consumers rely on brands to a much greater degree than do religious consumers, particularly when income is high.

Date: December 26, 2008
Time: 15:00
Location: Özyeğin University, Auditorium 1

The Scholar and Historian Arnold Reisman Was at Özyeğin

The Scholar and Historian Arnold Reisman Was at Özyeğin The American Scholar and historian Arnold Reisman, the author of Turkey's Modernization: Refugees from Nazism and Ataturk's Vision, gave a lecture entitled "From Nazi KZ Camps to a Turkish Safe-Haven: An Untold Story" at Özyeğin University on 25 November, Tuesday.

The lecture explored the significant success achieved by the societal and educational reform program run by Turkey following the invitation and arrival of 190 eminent professionals and their families who were expelled from their countries in the dire conditions of Nazi Germany. This presentation addressed the historical context, the invitations, the emigres' impact on Turkish society, and their contributions to knowledge; before, during, and after, their sojourn in Turkey.

For this vital period in the Turkish history that is still unknown to many, Reisman stated that "In 1933 Turkey seized on an opportunity, as we say in America, to "do good and to do well." It did "good" by saving many intellectuals from extermination. It did "well" by having them help in implementing Turkey's reform programs."

Circulating Tumor Cell Chip Among The Top 10 Innovations

Circulating Tumor Cell Chip Among The Top 10 Innovations American science and technology magazine Popular Mechanics, voted the top 10 world-changing innovations in its November 2008 issue. The circulating tumor cell chip ranked among the top 10, was developed by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Toner, board of trustees member of Özyeğin University.

Hard to diagnose cancer before metastasis

Ninety percent of cancer deaths occur after tumor cells have metastasized, traveling through the blood-stream to seed new cancer sites. Tragically, doctors can't tell that a cancer is metastasizing until symptoms appear, which delays treatment. The hurdle is that the circulating tumor cells, or CTCs, are just too rare, accounting for only a few cells per billion in the bloodstream. Furthermore, outside the body they are too fragile to survive the lab procedures used in standard blood tests.

Biomedical engineer Mehmet Toner, a faculty member both at the Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School and Massachusettes Institude of Technology and Harvard University, led a team that tackled the problem. The new diagnostic device is a silicon chip the size of a business card. It is etched with 78,000 tiny posts, each narrower than a human hair and coated with antibodies that attract CTCs. When a blood sample is slowly pumped through the chip, red and white blood cells and platelets bounce past the posts and escape, while CTCs stick.

99% of sensitivity rate in capturing the cancer cells

Nobel laureate Phil Sharp, a member of MIT's Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, found the first test results, published in the journal Nature, "stunning." Toner's chip found CTCs in all but one of 116 samples from 68 patients with metastatic cancers-a remarkable 99 percent sensitivity rate.

In the short term, the chip will give doctors instant feedback, Sharp says, allowing them "to follow the course of cancer in a patient, characterize the cells and try to design the best therapy." Eventually, it may yield cheap cancer screening for the general population. Researchers have long predicted that a new generation of fast and inexpensive diagnostic tools would transform medicine. Toner's CTC chip is a dramatic advance in that direction.

Mentioning the privilege of being the first, Ezgi said: "Starting from scratch is indeed a hard, laborous, and challenging task, which requires courage. However, you must remember that those who marked history and are immortal are the first's and the most's. To be the 'First' or the 'Most' is what makes you special. We are privileged. Our voices will bring these classrooms to life for the first time. We shall be the ones publishing the school gazette for the first time; it will be us who first presides our alumni association. What prepares you to life is to create something with your own hands, your own effort. This is what is wanted from us here at Özyeğin, and this is what is being offered to us."

"This is a classroom really conceived for us!"

At the inauguration ceremony, the Rector of Özyeğin University, Prof. Dr. Erhan Erkut shared the first lesson of the year 2008-2009 with his guests. They saw the opportunities which Özyeğin University offers and they took risk by being the first students of this university. Our students have all the qualities required by an entrepreneurial and innovative university."
