Özyeğin University Wins the Moot Court Cross Examination Competition

The Moot Court Cross Examination Competition organized jointly by the  Faculty of Law at Özyeğin University and the Faculty of Law at Bahçeşehir University concluded with a final competition on April 24, 2019.

In the final round to determine the winner of the competition, “Veritas”, the team of the Faculty of Law at Özyeğin University, competed against "Amicus Curiae”, the team of the Faculty of Law at Bahçeşehir University, and won the cross examination competition, earning the highest score.

The Faculty of Law at Bahçeşehir University played host to a series of cross examination training sessions until the application period is over, for the teams that participated in the competition with their moot court videos. During training, academicians and legal practitioners gave lectures on criminal procedure law, and explained direct questions, and the cross examination techniques, in particular, in Turkish law and comparative law. At the end of training, the teams “Çapraz Ateş” (Crossfire) and “Veritas” from the Faculty of Law at Özyeğin University, "Amicus Curiae” from the Faculty of Law at Bahçeşehir University, and "Puer Legem"  from the Faculty of Law at Şehir University advanced to the final round of the competition, which took place on April 24.

The participating teams which previously demonstrated a local court hearing in their videos performed a moot appeal hearing during the final competition. Out of the four teams, the top two teams that earned the highest scores based on the evaluation of their performance in the moot appeal hearing moved on to the final round with equal scores. In the final round, the teams "Amicus Curiae" and "Veritas” competed against each other. The teams asked direct questions to witnesses they have never seen before, using cross-examination technique, and answered the questions of the members of the jury. “Veritas”, the team from the Faculty of Law at Özyeğin University, earned the highest score in this round, and won the first place in the cross-examination competition.

The competition also honored the students that best performed their roles in the videos. Özyeğin University Faculty of Law students Muhammed Fatih TERECE, Büşra TANRIÖVER, and İrem TOKAL received the BEST CHIEF JUSTICE, BEST PROSECUTOR, and BEST DEFENDER awards, respectively. Canberk KÖYLÜ, Hanzala ERİKEL and Ubeydullah YOZGAT won the BEST DEFENDANT award, while İpek AYDEMİR and Yelten İrem ÖZKAN were presented the “BEST VICTIM” award. Finally, Yaşar Kaan KARAGÖL and  Sarp Anıl NAR won the BEST CLERK and BEST USHER awards, respectively.
