Our Industrial Engineering Team Selected as a Finalist for 2020 INFORMS Operations Research & Analytics Student Team Competition

INFORMS, the leading international association for Operations Research & Analytics professionals with over 12 thousand members from all around the world, announced the top 6 finalists of its fourth annual INFORMS O.R. & Analytics Student Team Competition.Out of the 274 teams from 26 countries registered for the 2020 competition, the Özyeğin University team qualified to advance to the finals.

The Özyeğin University team led by Dr. İhsan Yanıkoğlu and Dr. Dilek Günneç from the Faculty of Engineering is made up of our studentsAhmet Erarslan (senior Industrial Engineering student), Ali Kaan Kurbanzade(senior Industrial Engineering student with a minor in International Finance), Berk Eğen (senior Industrial Engineering student with a minor in Computer Science), Çağrı Özmemiş (senior Industrial Engineering student), Merve Sucuoğlu(senior Industrial Engineering student), and  Rüzgar Coşkun (senior Industrial Engineering student with a double major in International Finance). Although the competition is also open to both undergraduate and graduate students from all around the world, the Özyeğin University team is made up of undergraduate students only.

Under the title sponsorship by Bayer Crop Science in 2020, the competition provides a challenging and multi-faceted business problem for teams to tackle with in order to assess students’ problem solving skills based on real data. This year, the competition challenged student teams to design a distribution network to determine product flows amid capacity constraints at a fictitious manufacturing company.  Using realistic data about the number of facilities, locations, manufacturing processes, and equipment, students performed statistical analyses for better planning, and developed strategies to establish the current manufacturing capabilities, and balance the work load across each of the manufacturing locations.

The Özyeğin University team qualified to advance to the finals with their manufacturing planning project “Hybrid Approach to a Multi-Level Supply Chain Problem Using Parameter Tuning Machine Learning Algorithm” which they developed exclusively for Bayer Crop Science.

The student team competition is the largest competition organized for students by INFORMS, one of the leading international organizations in Industrial Engineering and Business Management. The top finalists of this largest student competition are as follows:

  • Ozyegin University, Turkey
  • Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel
  • Boğaziçi University, Turkey
  • Tilburg University, the Netherlands
  • Bilkent University, Turkey
  • Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile

The finalist teams will present their solutions during a video conference on April 27 and April 28. The winners will be announced during an online awards ceremony on April 29.

About the INFORMS Operations Research & Analytics Student Team Competition:

The student teams were given the same business problem, data sets, and access to software to solve a challenging problem using an O.R. and analytics approach.  A panel of industry and academic experts evaluated written submissions to select the finalists based on each teams’ use of the full analytics process, from framing the problem to methodology selection, data use, model building, and quantitative analysis.
