The Biomechatronics Laboratory aims to improve the quality of human life by integrating robotic companions into dynamic human environments. Our research philosophy focuses on synthesizing a viable human-robot symbiosis to assist humans in a safe and reliable manner. Human-robot symbiosis may take the form of exoskeleton-supported walking aid or quadruped-supported surveillance; the common ground in these applications is the symbiotic human-robot coupling for enhanced quality of life.

CCRG - Cloud Computing Research Group Laboratories

CCRG lab is actively pursuing R&D efforts in cloud computing, big data and machine learning fields. PhD and Master students develop and improve their skills in data engineering, smart algorithms, distributed systems design, and performance analysis using cloud resources. HODM-Lab Biomechatronics Laboratory aims to enhance the quality of life of humans that experience physical difficulties in general. To this end, the particular research philosophy we follow is the synthesis of feasible human-robot symbiosis so as to physically assist humans in a safe and dependable manner. With this motivation in mind, our research activities involve in mechatronic hardware design and manufacturing, mathematical modeling, biomechanically feasible sensor-actuator interface design, system identification, real-time controller synthesis, motion planning, simulation and experiment studies and data analysis. Main research topics in our group can be listed as below: Lower body exoskeleton development for complete paraplegia support (with no crutches) Physical human-robot collaboration for impedance-critical tasks Push recovery and online stabilization for legged systems Simulating pathological gaits to extract patient-specific walking trajectories Low-impedance actuator development with a high power-to-weight ratio In addressing these research goals, we prioritize the notion of human-friendly robotics, a design and control concept in which humans and robots safely co-exist and co-operate. Therefore, human-coupled stability, inherent compliance, and environmental adaptability are chiefly regarded.

OZU Vibrations and Acoustics Laboratory is a state of the art teaching/research facility involved in theoretical, numerical and experimental analysis of engineering systems. The major mission of the laboratory is: 1) to conduct fundamental and applied research in vibrations and acoustics, 2) to support the challenging industry projects and provide technology transfer to industry, and to promote undergraduate/graduate education in vibrations and acoustics and prepare students to industry and academia for their future careers. Multiple Robot Intelligence and Perception Laboratory focuses on research in improving the deep learning and computer vision fields, where the specific interests are in the applications of autonomous systems. Autonomous systems (the systems that can drive themselves both on land and in the air) determine their status and location relative to other autonomous systems and draw a (safe) route for themselves accordingly. For this type of scenario to work properly and safely, our Laboratory works on current problems that need to be solved now or in the future.

M2M - Micro to Macro Physical Soil Modelling Laboratory

In this laboratory, physical modeling is used to study the behavior of large and complex geo-structure prototypes. In these tests, similarity is sought in the reduced size model in the context of the scaling laws but maintaining the same physical characteristics to assess the soil-structure interaction phenomenon under static and dynamic loading conditions. At this stage, in the context of the ongoing research, the physical modeling conducted in the laboratory is about the behavior of highway and railroad embankments constructed over soft soils and supported by piles under the action of static loads from the embankment and dynamic loads from the train passes or highway traffic. Soil arching evolution and demolition under varying static and dynamic stress conditions are observed by image processing. All deformations and stresses are synchronously recorded by an instrumentation system mounted on the model. This laboratory is intended to home many similar projects in the coming months and years.

In the Medical and Biological Physics Laboratory led by Prof. Dr. Burçin Ünlü, disease modeling, imaging, and diagnosis studies are carried out using photoacoustic imaging, optical tomography, and ultrasound techniques. The focus has been specifically on developing new imaging systems for the early diagnosis of prostate and breast cancer. In addition, the structural properties of biological tissues and cells have been examined using techniques such as acoustic microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, and cell manipulation studies have been performed using laser beams and optical tweezers. Computational methods such as computer modeling, Monte Carlo simulations, and signal processing algorithms are also extensively used in the laboratory.

The DRUM (Dynamic Research on Urban Morphology) research group focuses on the diachronic aspect or urban and territorial transformations; it welcomes the expertise of Architects, Urban Planners, and Urban Morphologists including broad interdisciplinary cooperation with other disciplines such as Geography, History and Archaeology.

The research group aims to describe the dynamics of urban growth in different morphological and geographical settings by comparing a number of relevant case studies in capital cities. The research group applies the comparative method and other analytic tools, such as GIS, Space Syntax, Typological plans, Conzenian analysis at different scales and within different chronological phases to understand the past and above all, to design the future of large cities.

Architectural Design Research Laboratory is a platform that produces theoretical and practical knowledge through design and contributes to the design of qualified living environments. The main objectives of the laboratory are to create sharing and production environments such as seminars, workshops that bring together different actors of the architectural design environment and to develop research projects focused on architectural design. The laboratory also aims to allow students to experience the different stages and roles of the research and design process and, in this direction, cooperates with the architectural design office simulator (MITOS).

We examine human language system and its relation to cognition using developmental and cross-linguistic approaches. We adopt a multimodal view of language by focusing on both the auditory modality (speech) and the visual modality (speech, sign). We conduct behavioral and eye-tracking experiments with multiple populations (children, adults) and speakers of different languages (Turkish, English, Dutch, Turkish Sign Language) to establish which aspects of human cognition may be universally shared and which aspects may be shaped by linguistic diversity.

ÖzÜ Violence and Law Laboratory conducts awareness-raising activities to prevent violence against vulnerable groups including women, children, and the elderly. With this purpose ÖzÜ Violence and Law Laboratory aims to prepare brochures to raise awareness about violence, conduct field studies to reveal the current situation of violence, prepare current situation reports based on data. It also aims to prepare and organize trainings, panels, meetings, develop projects focused on prevention of violence, and present oral/poster presentations at congresses on violence. The students, the members of the Violence and Law Laboratory, are initially given 6 hours of basic training with 3 modules. Within the scope of the work of the Violence and Law Laboratory, which held its first meeting on January 17, 2023; brochures were prepared on a total of 6 topics: cyber violence, dating violence, sexual harassment, physical violence against children, violence between peers and stalking. Three projects were developed and applied to embassies and other fund providers. A total of 12 of our students presented 8 poster presentations at the 5th International Understanding Violence congress, which will be held on 9-10 May 2023, of which our University is one of the organizers. It is aimed that our students will go beyond the classical profile of lawyers and approach the events based on rights, work in a multidisciplinary field, have a high social responsibility awareness, produce data through field studies, present papers at congresses, develop projects as in best practices abroad, and be profiles that realize change rather than follow it.

Connect Legal Lab, which aims to be an effective legal research area in the age of connections, go into actions simultaneously with the Department of İnformation Technology Law of Özyeğin University Faculty of Law! Technology leaders now also accept that the most needed element is effective and fair legal rules in these new times when everything, living and non-living, from human brain to vehicles, is connected to the network and becoming digital. Therefore, in accord with Özyeğin University’s strategic principles, we established Connect Legal Lab. It is designed to establish an architecture of connection on the axis of law and technology, both among internal stakeholders (between different faculties, multidisciplinary) and between external stakeholders (academy-industry, academy-NGO’s). We aim to examine the legal effects of developing technology and bring law students and other disciplines that shape technology in academia and industry together with Connect Legal Lab, where being and interdisciplinary research area is one of our main priorities. Our main research areas include the legal effects of interconnected and developing technologies such as new wireless Technologies (5G and 6G), cyber security, data protection, smart cities, brain machine interfaces and neuro rights. In this context, we plan activities, which students can actively participate through research, events, projects and hackathons. In addition, we aim to contribute to undergraduate and graduate education within the framework of the legal effects of developing Technologies and to be a new generation knowledge transfer area that conducts research at national and international levels, established ties between academia and industry, and collaborates with institutions such as non-governmental organizations and museums.

The ÖzÜ Innovative Legal Lab is a laboratory established within the Özyeğin University Faculty of Law. Its aim is to make law more understandable and accessible to society. The lab focuses on human-centered design and conducts multidisciplinary studies in this direction. The laboratory combines law, technology, and design to create new legal products and services within a rights-based approach. Its goal is to contribute to digital transformation by bringing law and innovation together. The laboratory produces studies in the fields of legal design and law and technology, sharing this knowledge to benefit society. Additionally, it aims to carry out social responsibility projects for disadvantaged groups. The aim of legal design is to simplify and visualise legal texts, judicial decisions, legal processes, and contracts to make them understandable for everyone and facilitate access to justice. In the area of law and technology, the aim is to make law more automated and computable by seeking to integrate areas such as blockchain and artificial intelligence into legal processes, thus contributing to digital transformation.

The increasing number of artificial intelligence studies and applications in the world also necessitates the formation of law in this field. Established in 2022, ÖzÜ Artificial Intelligence Law Laboratory (AILAW) conducts research and organizes training in the field of law and information technologies with an interdisciplinary approach, with the contributions of faculty members and students at Özyeğin University. ÖzÜ Artificial Intelligence Law Lab aims to prepare publications, organize workshops, competitions, seminars and certificate programs, prepare projects, and create a technology law guide on current issues such as data privacy and security, personal data protection, artificial intelligence, internet of things, cybersecurity in the field of artificial intelligence law and information technologies.

The laboratory aims to produce child rights-based knowledge with a multi- and interdisciplinary approach in the academy, to bring the child rights-based understanding into the interest of all relevant disciplines, to implement of the right of the child to be heard and the right of the child to have his or her best interests taken as primary consideration and to contribute to the transformation of policy and practice, especially in the field of child protection. In order to achieve these goals, it conducts studies on the perception of childhood, develops and implements experimental studies based on a human nature and holistic approach and children' rights trainings.
