Mission Özyeğin University strives to be one of the premier entrepreneurial research universities of Turkey. Its mission is to create, share, and apply knowledge in the service to society. Focus on Commercialization Research provides the basis for sustainable economic growth as it is converted into technology by development. Application of our knowledge is targeted to generate economic benefits to the society through start-up and spinout companies, and through improved efficiency and productivity for existing companies. Our researchers are encouraged and expected to be a part of such activities to contribute to the world of practice through producing actionable knowledge for products, processes, and procedures in the areas of their specializations. We have a very large number of patents, national and international, invented by our faculty members and we are very keen in increasing this number.
Global Collaboration Özyeğin University is a national and international actor of research and collaborates with national and international organizations all around the world. Our researchers are strongly encouraged and supported to get into research partnerships with other researchers at national and international institutions.
Commitment to Support Özyeğin University provides its members physical, as well as intellectual facilities to work hard to realize its mission in research. Özyeğin campus is furnished with a growing number of research labs and facilities. The Özyeğin library has unlimited access to the existing knowledge base. Özyeğin University nurtures the freedom of its members to discover, debate and disseminate knowledge that form the ingredients for conducting cutting-edge research.
Achievements and the Future Despite her young age, Özyeğin University has already managed to attract a large number of high quality graduate students, national and international. Our research funding, both from industry and government agencies, is at significant levels even for international universities. We have been placed at above the seventh position in “Intercollegiate Entrepreneurship and Innovation Index” announced by the Department of Science, Industry and Technology among all Turkish universities since the establishment of this index. Our Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is among the first ten recipients of TUBITAK grant supporting university TTOs.

To produce research that is likely to make a societal or economic difference in the short term (such as technology that is close to commercialization, or reports that shape government or business policy or practice)
Ambitious research goals can only be achieved with an ambitious research agenda. Our “Research Mission and Vision Statement” provides most of the necessary ingredients for the achievement of our goals. The mechanisms we need to support our research activities are listed below in three categories. The details of these mechanisms can be found in the related documents and procedures.
1. Hire research-able full-time faculty with Ph.D.s from top research institutions.
Acquiring such talent depends on: a. reputation of the institution b. other researchers affiliated with the institution c. existing research infrastructure d. support for research activities (time for research, space, assistants, labs, library, conferences, etc.) e. quality of life (salary, benefits, lodging, transportation, location, etc.)
The first factor requires time and consistency. All the rest requires funding.
2. Establish graduate schools with M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in all faculties and departments with research faculty.
3. Research areas of excellence must be selected by the unit managers to maximize their unit’s research impact considering:
a. existing research team b. availability/cost of researchers c. availability/cost of infrastructure d. possibility of attracting external funding e. possibility of commercialization f. popularity/future applications g. uniqueness
4. Emphasize, recognize, and reward research output in faculty evaluations.
Research outputs include: a. publications (quality, quantity) b. citations c. research awards d. external funding e. Ph.D. graduates f. commercial Impact (including intellectual property) g. scientific Impact h. social Impact i. publicity
1. Have a Vice-Rector responsible from research, overseeing all research related activities.
2. Keep an active University Research Board (URB) to provide centralized coordination and support of research activities.
3. Keep an active Technology Transfer Office (TTO) that matches the needs of the business, industry, and government with the interests and abilities of the research faculty and assists the research faculty with research grant preparation and follow-up, intellectual property matters, and the monetization of research outputs.
4. Help creation of spin-off companies from faculty research outputs and support the development of entrepreneurial infrastructure with a Center for Innovation.
5. Create financially self-sustaining centers for focused research activities depending on the needs and opportunities
1. Assign a course load of four courses per year, with the possibility of course load reduction for faculty members with the most active research programs.
2. Keep a research fund pool to support scholarly and funded research activities of the faculty.
When external funds are not available for an important research activity, this fund may be used for: a. conferences/meetings (attendance, organization) support b. basic lab equipment and maintenance c. lab supplies d. assistants’ fees
3. Set up research facilities (i.e. labs, libraries, workshops) as needed. This includes: a. space b. equipment c. technician support d. IT Support e. library support
4. Hire graduate student research assistants and post-doctoral fellows who will assist our faculty in carrying out their research.
5. Institute a study leave program (sabbaticals as well as shorter leaves).
6. Allow faculty members to provide consultancy to industry to establish relations leading to:
a. research grants b. access to research data c. creation of intellectual property d. creation of internship and job opportunities for our graduates.
Metrics The metrics implied by the Research Mission and Vision Statement and our goals above are self-evident: 1. Paper publications in international refereed journals (we target one paper/year per full-time faculty member, although this may be area dependent and specified accordingly.)
2. Research grants received from TUBITAK, EU, and other granting agencies as well as government and businesses (we target an average of 100,000 TL/year per full-time faculty member, again this may depend on the area of research.)
3. Technology transfer and commercialization activities such as patents, prototypes, spin-off companies (we target one company per year.)
4. Other research dissemination activity directed at the practice community (teaching cases, technical reports, monographs, books and book chapters, workshops and seminars)
