Our Engineering Faculty Member Assistant Prof. Barkan Uğurlu’s groundbreaking project receives H2020-Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions-IF-2016 Individual Fellowship to serve as the driving force behind the Industry 4.0 transformation

ComradeAssistant Prof. Barkan Uğurlu from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at our Faculty of Engineering was awarded the H2020-Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions - IF 2016 Individual Fellowship in recognition of his project “CoMRAde: A Collaborative Mobile Robot Arm That Learns Impedance Critical Tasks from Humans”.

Assistant Prof. Barkan Uğurlu’s research interests include robot-aided rehabilitation with active exoskeletons to restore the walking ability of stroke patients, artificial muscles, rehabilitation robots, human-robot interaction, and industrial robots. Assistant Prof. Uğurlu’s project will be funded over the next two years under the EU’s Horizon2020 Program. The project was awarded the Individual Fellowship after ranking among the top 8.6% among 509 submissions from over all the EU countries. The project CoMRAde also marks Özyeğin University’s first H2020-Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions-IF project.

“Today, robotic automation services are imported and a substantial amount of funds are thus transferred to overseas firms,” remarked Assistant Prof. Uğurlu. “The project CoMRAde will be the next step taken forward in the literature of robotic automation in industrial manufacturing. If successfully completed, it will be the first of its kind and serve as the driving force behind the Industry 4.0 transformation. The project entails the development of robotic algorithms for robots which will collaborate with workers on the production line. To this end, we have entered into cooperation with Arçelik Atölye 4.0, and already started working to directly try out the project outputs on the production line.”

The project will be conducted jointly with Neuroscience Labs., ATR, Japan, non-EU partner, and Jozef Stefan Institute, Slovenia, EU partner. For more about the project, please visit http://comrade.ozyegin.edu.tr/.
