Özyeğin University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Burcu Balçık’s Paper Honored With “Best Applied Paper Award” at SEIO-Fundación BBVA 2023 Awards

The article “A Cost-Sharing Mechanism for Multi-Country Partnerships in Disaster Preparedness” co-authored by Prof. Dr. Burcu Balçık, a professor of Industrial Engineering at Özyeğin University and the founder of the Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Management Research Laboratory, with Marie-Ève Rancourt and Gilbert Laporte from HEC Montréal has been honored with the Best Applied Paper Award in Operations Research at the SEIO-Fundación BBVA 2023 Awards.

The SEIO-Fundación BBVA 2023 Awards are presented annually in cooperation with the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research (SEIO) and the BBVA Foundation (Fundación BBVA) to recognize originality, innovation, and contributions in the field of statistics and operations research. The study, which the committee describes as “an interesting application of operations research in humanitarian partnership,” focuses on the importance of multinational cooperation to aid in disaster preparedness in the Caribbean region, which is frequently affected by devastating hurricanes, by means of a joint emergency supplies network.
