Özyeğin University Advances Its Innovation Ecosystem Through Duke University’s Future Universities Alliance

Özyeğin University (OzU) is advancing its commitment to shaping the future of higher education, innovation, and entrepreneurship through its participation in Duke University’s Future Universities Alliance (FUA). As the only higher education institution from Türkiye in the Alliance’s inaugural cohort, OzU is contributing to a global community dedicated to exploring innovative approaches to higher education and institutional transformation.

Prof. Barış Tan, President of Özyeğin University, and Dr. İsmail Arı represented the University at the FUA Global Summit, held October 3–5, 2026, at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The summit brought together more than 200 senior representatives from 49 higher education institutions across 23 countries and five continents to exchange insights and explore shared challenges and opportunities shaping the future of higher education.

Discussions addressed key strategic priorities, including next-generation student skills, teaching and learning in the age of artificial intelligence, research priorities, financial accessibility, university–industry collaboration, micro-credentials, international accreditation, campus experiences, institutional development, and impact assessment.

OzU-X: An Integrated Innovation and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem

Within the Future Universities Alliance’s Innovation Sandbox program, Özyeğin University is focusing on the future development of OzU-X, its integrated innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Featured in the “Amplifying Signature Innovations” category, the project aims to strengthen the connections between education, entrepreneurship, research, industry partnerships, and student experience while expanding the ecosystem’s reach and impact.

OzU-X brings together a distinctive portfolio of units and infrastructure that support innovation and entrepreneurship across the University:

• Fit Startup Factory – Startup Incubation Center
• Openfab – Maker Atelier
• Technology Transfer Office (TTO)
• Center for Professional Development • Alumni Office • Sustainability Platform

Building on this integrated structure, the Innovation Sandbox project seeks to strengthen the pathways that connect ideas and research with entrepreneurial ventures, industry collaboration, and real-world applications. By expanding support for students and alumni interested in entrepreneurship, the initiative aims to foster new ventures, strengthen the pipeline of future founders, and generate lasting socioeconomic impact.

Participation in the Alliance will also create opportunities for international exchange, networking, collaborative curriculum development, and institutional learning. These connections will enable Özyeğin University to explore, test, and develop innovative approaches to education, entrepreneurship, and the evolution of its innovation ecosystem. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Through the Future Universities Alliance, Özyeğin University aims to strengthen its international collaborations, advance its innovation ecosystem, and expand the contributions of its students, alumni, and research community to society and the economy.
