Abstract:

This thesis is at the intersection of power electronics/control (PEC) and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based logic design. This is a neglected area because Microcontroller (MCU) based design for PEC was acceptable and easier until recently. Another reason is that it is difficult to gather engineers that are in command of both fields in the same team. With the advent of newer power transistor (PT) technologies, it became possible to increase switching frequencies (SFs) and improve the circuit sizes and costs. The push towards higher PT SFs is three folds. One is that the newer PT technologies achieve the power efficiencies of the older technologies only at higher SFs. Yet, they can be run at even faster SFs, hence yielding even better efficiency than older PTs. Also, higher SFs offer lower kinematics ripple, hence resulting in smoother operation, which translates to better riding comfort in electric cars, for example. All of that basically implies that, going forward, the industry will use FPGAs more and more for power electronics/control, as higher SFs (and yet low latency and real-time operation) are not possible with MCUs but are possible with FPGAs due to the parallelism they offer. Having said that, this thesis showcases an FPGA based implementation of a specific PEC problem. That is the control of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM). IPSMs, a type of brushless DC motors, are the best choice for electric vehicles due to their high
power density/efficiency, high initial torque values, and wide constant power operating region. In this thesis, we show that we are able to achieve an FPGA design that is more efficient than similar works in the literature, namely, three times the SF with approximately half the logic area.
