Abstract:

This study investigates differentiations between conventional and participation banks and provides comparative analysis of their financial statements and resilience to macroeconomic changes. Largest commercial banks were examined in Turkey between 4th quarter of 2013 and 4th quarter of 2020 with quarterly statements. In addition, the macroeconomic variables at the same period and investigate how changes in macroeconomics affect conventional and participation banks were studied. 

Analysis indicates there are some evidence that conventional and participation banks differ from each other with respect to product structure, asset composition and efficiency. The study also demonstrates that conventional and participation banks show different resilience levels to changes in macroeconomics. Those differences mainly are result of the sharia-compliant rules that participation banks need to obey and follow. 

It is concluded that participation banks seem more resilient and robust to macroeconomic changes. On average, they are affected less by the changes in macroeconomics compare to other banks in my data.

Bio:

Muhammed Said Özyürür received the B.A. degree in Business Administration from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey in 2017. He graduated from the university one semester early while also becoming an honour student. He is pursuing a M.Sc. in Financial Engineering at Özyeğin University under the supervision of Dr. Levent Güntay. He currently works as Senior Associate for Strategy and Corporate Performance Management Department at Kuveyt Türk Participation Bank.
