Smoke-Free Zones

Dear Members of Özyeğin University,

We regretfully observe smoking on campus, especially in front of building entrances. Being a third generation university, instead of banning smoking across campus, we created smoking areas for you as an alternative to the areas which cause disturbance due to exposure to second-hand smoke. We completed the planning process in line with the feedbacks we received from our students and staff. We also discussed the matter during the respective advisory board and executive board meetings, where all stakeholders were duly represented, and made additional improvements as a result of these discussions.

Please be advised that as a result of these collaborative works, we have identified and marked the alternative smoker free areas on campus, and we placed red ash trash receptacles in these areas. Smokers are expected smoking and to smoke in the designated smoking areas, and are kindly asked not to use the passage between the AB2 or ScOLa buildings or building entrances for smoking.

We believe that the success of this policy depends on the contributions and cooperation of all the smoking/non-smoking members of our community. Therefore, your cooperation will be highly appreciated in informing the members of our community who smoke at building entrances or the passages between buildings about our new policy, and reminding them that they should use the designated smoking zones.

As implemented by the established and innovative universities such as Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Oregon State, University of Southern California, our new policy aims to prevent disturbance due to exposure to second-hand smoke on campus, especially in front of building entrances. Your cooperation and compliance with this policy will be highly appreciated in line with our commitment to health, safety, and environment.

Kind Regards,

HSE Department
