International Award to Prof. Dr. Evren Balta

Prof. Dr. Evren Balta, International Relations Department Head at the Özyeğin University, was honored with the Global and Transnational Sociology Best Book by an International Scholar Award by American Sociological Association (ASA) in recognition of her co-authored book “The American Passport: National Citizenship in the Age of Transnationalism”.

Written jointly by Prof. Dr. Balta and Associate Prof. Olcay, the book provides a multifaceted analysis of a series of interviews conducted with over one hundred individuals and families, specifically those who possess or seek to obtain U.S. citizenship while residing in Turkey. The book explores the diverse meanings and values that people attribute to U.S. citizenship based on the living conditions in Turkey as it conveys to the reader the results of the interviews held with a diverse set of groups from Turkish families who had their children in the USA to Turkish-American citizens who lived in the USA for many years but decided to return to Turkey or to natural-born American citizens who permanently relocated to Turkey to start a new life for various reasons.

The culmination of seven years hard work, “The American Passport: National Citizenship in the Age of Transnationalism” was published by University of Pennsylvania Press (PENN PRESS) in 2020.
