Abstract:

Severe plastic deformation (SPD) methods have received significant attention in fabricating a combination of similar and dissimilar metal composites. Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is one of the SPD techniques employed to produce high strength, fine-grained, and multi-layered metal matrix composites (MMCs). The present study deals with the production of titanium-IF steel and aluminum-IF steel composites, and the analysis of their characteristics. Microstructural evaluation and mechanical behavior of processed composites were examined by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and mechanical tests. Finally, experiment results were validated using numerical analysis.

Accumulation of rolling imparts large strain that results in grain refinement in the processed composite. This leads to significant improvement in hardness and strength levels with the expanse of low ductility. Ductility was improved by applying post-ARB heat treatment due to recovery and recrystallization. A decent composite was attained after a long aging period during heat treatment due to precipitation hardening. The ARB process was modeled by employing finite element analysis through ANSYS workbench. A close agreement between experimental findings and numerical simulations was observed.

Bio:

Furqan Tahir was born in Pakistan in 1993. He received his B.Sc. degree in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering from the University of Punjab, Pakistan in 2017. Currently, he is pursuing his M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering at Özyeğin University. His main area of research at MEMFIS group of Özyeğin University focuses on the manufacturing and evaluation of mechanical behavior of lightweight composites utilizing severe plastic deformation by accumulative rolling bonding.
