Özyeğin University's Department of Humanities and Social Sciences invites you to ‘The 1720 Imperial Circumcision Celebrations under Scrutiny: A Holistic Analysis of an Ottoman Public Festival’ as a part of our talk series, Critical Approaches in Social Sciences. Dr. Sinem Erdoğan İşkorkutan will join us as the speaker together with Dr. Feray Coşkun as the moderator.

Abstract

This talk will focus on the 1720 imperial circumcision festival held at Istanbul during the reign of Sultan Ahmed III. It will aim at presenting the methodological and theoretical framework of the study whilst also illustrating the variety of sources used during the enquiry. At the same time, through a discussion of some peculiar examples on the planning, staging, and representation phases of the festival, the talk will intend to show the complexity of the rites that formed the event as they pose us new questions related to socio-cultural and art history of the period.
