Thesis Subject: The Roles of Attachment Behaviors and Conflict Resolution Styles in Relationship Satisfaction: A Comparison of Long-Distance and Geographically Close Romantic Relationships

Thesis Advisor: Senem Zeytinoğlu-Saydam, PhD

Abstract: The present study investigated how people in long-distance relationships (LDRs) and geographically close relationships (GCRs) differ in using attachment behaviors and conflict resolution styles during Covid-19 pandemic, and in turn, how they are related to their relationship satisfaction. The sample consisted of 201 individuals who were aged between 18 and 31 years old and had been in a romantic relationship at least 12 months. The instruments that were implemented were Demographic Form, Long-distance Relationship Index, Brief Accessibility, Responsiveness, and Engagement (BARE) Scale, Conflict Resolution Styles Scale (CRSS), Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS). The relationship status was determined by the physical distance between partners. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that negative and positive resolution styles, relational coping, and attachment behaviors explained significant variances in relationship satisfaction for both LDRs and GCRs. Mediation analysis revealed that attachment behaviors partially mediate the relationship between negative resolution style and relationship satisfaction. However, the indirect effect became non-significant when relational coping was controlled for.
