Özyeğin University Faculty Member Dr. Kadir Durak and His Team Develop World’s First Hybrid and Real-Time Quantum Communication Network

Assistant Professor Kadir Durak from the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering at Özyeğin University, and his team have developed the world’s first hybrid and real-time communication network on the Özyeğin University campus. The network consists of a quantum key distributor and three terminals, and can be used in metropolitan areas as well as on campus.

While it is recognized by experts in this field that building a real-time quantum key distribution network is a very challenging task due to the strong computational requirements that key generation calls for, the network design proposed by Dr. Durak and his team can achieve real-time key generation speeds between 4 Mbps and 70 Mbps, depending on the configuration parameters. The project employed the AES-256 algorithm, with a configuration in which the quantum key is renewed every second. Through the project, a real-time video transmission was performed, and a practically applicable network was built. The network configuration is achieved with the help of Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Prof. Fatih Uğurdağ along with Prof. Sezer Uğurdağ and Prof. Aydın Yeniay.
