Özyeğin University Becomes First University in Türkiye to Receive the TS ISO 46001 Certification

With the 2025–2026 academic year designated as the “Year of Water,” and sustainability at the core of its mission since its foundation, Özyeğin University has reached a new milestone. In recognition of our proactive initiatives to raise awareness of water conservation and our commitment to the systematic, efficient, and sustainable management of water resources, we have become the first university in Türkiye with international standards to be awarded the TS ISO 46001 Water Efficiency Management System Certification by the Turkish Standards Institution (TSE).

Grounded in its sustainability vision and environmental awareness for many years, Özyeğin University’s institutional and administrative structure has played a significant role in obtaining the certification. Thanks to the university’s sustainability practices, sustainable living is prioritized in many areas, including water, energy, waste management, transportation, and biodiversity. The university has implemented its strategic roadmap to raise awareness regarding efficient use of water and support institutional transformation as part of the “Year of Water.” The university is committed to sharing transparent data on campus water consumption, and it develops and runs water conservation projects with student clubs and organizes several events with public institutions and non-governmental organizations to raise awareness.

Özyeğin University President Prof. Barış Tan hosted TSE President Mahmut Sami Şahin, Group Presidents Volkan Erginer and Burcu Pala, Presidential Advisor Musa Horzum, and Certification Manager Yunus Mercan on January 21, 2025, at the President’s Office on campus. The meeting focused on sustainability, water efficiency, and institutional transformation as key drivers of long-term impact, and concluded with the certification ceremony.

Özyeğin University supports this achievement in water efficiency with a comprehensive management approach that encompasses various dimensions of environmental sustainability, primarily energy efficiency and waste management. While efficiency-focused infrastructure is used to audit and reduce energy consumption across the campus, the processes of reducing waste at source, separating it, and recycling it are also systematically measured and managed. This integrated approach, based on the effective use of natural resources, is an important part of the university’s sustainability vision, which aims to continuously improve its environmental performance.
