New Course: SEC 304 Active Citizenship and Civic Engagement

SEC 304 Active Citizenship and Civic Engagement is a free elective course designed to make civil society and civic participation issues accessible to students in the Turkish-medium programmes. The primary aim of the course is to introduce students to the core concepts of active citizenship and to help them understand how civic engagement works in practice.

The course ensures that students who do not plan to work in this field still acquire civic literacy, while providing a strong foundation for those who wish to pursue further study or take an active part in civil society.

Throughout the course, students will examine ideas such as human rights, equality, and inclusion, together with the many forms participation can take, including volunteering, art, sport, and digital citizenship. Working with real initiatives from Turkey and elsewhere, students will discuss what makes these initiatives effective and what could be improved.

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse civil society initiatives, compare different forms of civic participation, and present a reasoned evaluation of an initiative of their choice.

The course is taught in Turkish and is open to undergraduate students of the Turkish-medium Architecture and Law programmes.
