The Integrated Design Process of OzU’s ScOLa Building Discussed at EKODESIGN
The EKODESIGN Conference will take place on April 26, 2016. This year’s “Special Selection by Yapı Journal” panel will turn the spotlight on our ScOLa Building which is completed under the leadership of the Center for Energy, Environment and Economy (CEEE) at OzU within the scope of the EU / NEED4B Project (New Energy Efficient Demonstration for Buildings). During the panel, the ScOLa Building will be examined as an “Anatomical Case Study”.
Since 2012, CEEE has been leading NEED4B Project which is coordinated by Spanish Zaragoza University CIRCE Energy Center in partnership with seven institutions from five different EU countries. Within the context of Project, demonstration buildings in different climatic zones, with different buildings types and uses have been constructed in several typologies and sizes. ScOLa as the demo site building of Project’s Turkish part, has been designed and constructed under coordination of CEEE and in partnership with FIBA Holding and B-Design. Innovative and integrated energy implementations are applied in ScOLa Building. It is located in OzU Çekmeköy Campus and functions as a part of other interrelated and educational LEED sertificated buildings.

The panel will feature CEEE's Director Prof. Dr. M. Pinar Menguc, Yasemin Somuncu, a master architect (CEEE), Emre Gursoy, an architect (B-Design), Yasemin Keskin Enginoz (Yapı Journal), Saadet Ozkan (Technical Services at OzU), and Nergis Akbay (ScOLa). During the panel the ScOLa Building will be cut open and studied with anatomical interventions. The study will provide a deeper level of understanding of energy efficient architectural structures, while examining energy efficient and cost effective building process. The study will also provide a thorough analysis of the approach and process needed to design both this space and the building. The panel will focus on both the building’s integrated design process and the development of its key performance indicators during the design, building and operation phases within the scope of the NEED4B Project.
The panel will also discuss the impact of the ScOLa Building’s consumption on the annual Invisible Saving Value of USD 200,000 based on the “negawatt” concept as the ScOLa Building not only did meet the targets of the EU Project but also went far beyond it. The building’s total consumption is calculated as 45 kWh/m2, which is less than what was targeted within the scope of the EU Project.
