Our Guiding Principles

Our Guiding Principles

ENTREPRENEURIALISM

We believe that entrepreneurial skills are key to developing business leaders who are innovators and enablers of change.

At the Faculty of Business, students learn not only how to set up, organize, and manage a business venture but also how to use innovation and creativity in spotting opportunities, generating ideas, and solving problems–whether within an existing corporate structure, a business startup, or a social project.

Some of the channels through which we deliver this to our students are:

  • Our core first-year BUS 101 and BUS 102 courses, common to all of our six undergraduate programs. In BUS 101, students are exposed to all functional areas of business and gain hands-on experience on how to evaluate the viability of a business. BUS 102 is a survey course covering all business functions from an entrepreneurial perspective, culminating in the preparation and presentation of business plans.
  • Students interested in pursuing entrepreneurship or strengthening their entrepreneurial skills further, have the opportunity to select from a multitude of courses, ranging from Creativity and Ideation through Business Model Design to Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
  • The Start-Up Factory is a business accelerator supporting technology-based business ventures from the stage of ideation, all the way through to product launch. Maker Studio is an incubator focused on product design, supporting entrepreneurs with prototype development, market analysis, and facilitating contacts with potential production partners and investors.
  • Certificate in Entrepreneurship. Geared towards undergraduate-level students, this series of courses trains participants in business idea development, team design, consumer sentiment analysis, and business plan creation.
  • Executive education programs in Ideation and Creative Destruction are provided on an open-enrollment or corporate-training basis.
  • Elevator Pitch Competition. Recurring business plan competition, in which students pitch a business idea to leading entrepreneurs and business experts from Turkey.

INDUSTRY INTEGRATION

Future business leaders are developed and nurtured with the help of a solid academic curriculum, integrated with industry practice.

To become successful business leaders, along with developing analytical, critical-thinking, and teamwork skills and acquiring broad knowledge of theory and academic research, students need to cultivate an open mind and ability to connect the dots, which could only come from exposure to a wide variety of practical experiences.

At the Faculty of Business, academic experience and industry practice are seamlessly integrated:

  • Sectoral Solutions course track. All Faculty of Business students take a sequence of courses spread over two or three years, that build knowledge and sectoral-analysis skills for the main sectors of the economy. In the second year, students are exposed to 8-10 different industrial sectors. They gather information about them, analyze their markets, and learn through invited talks of prominent industry representatives. In the third year, students focus on several sectors of choice in both the global and local arenas and learn in depth through case studies and sectoral analyses. In their final year, most students engage in a team-based project with a company from their preferred sector, working towards solving an actual problem outstanding for that company. Students pursuing the B.A. in Business Administration, finish the Sectoral Solutions course sequence with a comprehensive multi-week simulation game, integrating all sectoral and business function knowledge acquired throughout their undergraduate education.
  • Mandatory and voluntary internships. All students are required to undertake 8 to 12 weeks of internships with either domestic or international companies. Most students choose to pursue longer and varied internships on a voluntary basis as well.
  • Professional Development Office. A dedicated team of professional advisers supports students in their skill development, provide career guidance, and organize the annual Sectoral Orienteering Days. This is a two-week marathon of workshops, on-campus company visits and presentations from invited guest speakers, mock interviews, and career talks, covering the whole spectrum of industry sectors.
  • Alp Alkaş Retail and Real Estate Center, Center for Computational Finance, and Center for Energy, Environment and Economy. Focused on bringing together academic research and industry practice, these centers serve as bridges between academia and industry.

INTERDISCIPLINARITY

We believe that the complex problems of business and society can be addressed better by bringing together the best traditions of different areas of research and practice.

  • Dual and minor degrees. Successful students are encouraged to pursue dual degrees or minor programs across disciplines within the Facluty of Business or across different schools of the university. Through such degrees, students have the opportunity to design their own educational experience, achieving synergies across disciplines, and broadening their expertise in the knowledge fields of interest to them.
  • Certificate programs in Sustainability in Business and Entrepreneurship. Under the umbrellas of these two certificate programs, we bring together academics from multiple backgrounds to teach in an interdisciplinary curriculum.
  • Interdisciplinary research. Many faculty members of the Faculty of Business pursue collaborative research projects, ranging from marketing-finance interface, through entrepreneurial decision-making and cross-cultural customer behavior, ethics and corporate social responsibility, to nanotechnology and marketing .

INTEGRITY IN BUSINESS AND SOCIETY

We aim to foster the future business leaders of Turkey and the world who will enable positive change in business and society, by creating, sharing, and applying management knowledge.

Social responsibility and personal integrity are a part of student academic and extracurricular life at the Faculty of Business and Ozyegin University.

  • Courses focusing on social responsibility (ENG 101 and ENG 102). Within the core Faculty of Business curriculum, this two-course series emphasizes both corporate social responsibility and personal volunteerism, while developing English-language skills.
  • Course and certificate in Sustainability in Business. The course explores how the practice of environmental, social, and economic sustainability could be integrated into the decision-making processes of all functional areas of business.
  • Duyarli OzU. A wide-reaching platform brings together our students and non-governmental organizations to cooperate on a rich variety of community-engagement projects.
