Başak Kovankaya received her BA degree from the departments of International Relations and Economics at Istanbul University and her MA degree in Modern Turkish History from Yıldız Technical University. Her PhD dissertation in the Ataturk Institute at Boğaziçi University and in the Institute for History at Leiden University examines the nomadic forest workers in the Ottoman Empire. Before teaching at Özyeğin University, she taught courses on the history of modern Turkey at Yıldız Technical University and Boğaziçi University. Her areas of interest include social history of the Ottoman Empire, environmental history and ecological anthropology.
