Biography

Başak Akgül holds BA degrees in International Relations and Economics from Istanbul University and an MA degree in Modern Turkish History from Yıldız Technical University. She received her PhD in 2019 from Leiden University, Institute for History and Boğaziçi University, Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History with her dissertation entitled “Negotiating Nature: Ecology, Politics, and Nomadism in the Forests of Mediterranean Anatolia, 1870-1920”. She taught courses on the history of modern Turkey at Yıldız Technical University and Boğaziçi University. Her areas of interest include social history of the Ottoman Empire, environmental history and ecological anthropology.
