Özyeğin University advances interdisciplinary science by deliberately integrating methods, datasets, and theories across Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences—while also enabling science-to-society linkages where appropriate (for example, science combined with education, law, or health-related challenges). Our approach is built on cross-disciplinary integration (shared problem framing and multi-method research design), collaborative research ecosystems (faculty, centers, and external partners), and real‑world problem solving aligned with sustainability, resilience, health, and digital transformation priorities.

Interdisciplinarity is not treated as an anecdotal attribute; it is monitored systematically across publications and funded projects using internationally recognized bibliometric platforms supported by internal analytics, enabling continuous portfolio-level tracking. This monitoring shows a sustained, high share of interdisciplinary Scopus-indexed outputs across 2016–2025, and a consistently strong citation impact (FWCI) for interdisciplinary publications relative to the institutional average.

On the funding side, interdisciplinary project pipelines are supported through structured proposal development, partner engagement, and project governance—helping teams translate cross-disciplinary ideas into funded programmes (national and international) and implementable outcomes.

How We Measure
Methodology & Infrastructure

ÖzÜ's interdisciplinary research monitoring integrates internationally recognised bibliometric platforms with internal analytics systems, ensuring that interdisciplinarity is measured continuously at publication, project, and researcher level.

Scopus & SciVal

Publications spanning two or more distinct ASJC subject area clusters are classified as interdisciplinary. Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) normalises for field, year, and document type.

Researcher-Level Review

Each academic's output is assessed for disciplinary breadth and citation profile, identifying emerging interdisciplinary clusters and informing targeted support for cross-faculty research.

Project Monitoring (TTO)

All externally funded projects are classified by the TTO as interdisciplinary or single-discipline, enabling year-on-year tracking of funded research diversity alongside publication data.

Institutional Decision-Making

Interdisciplinary metrics feed directly into strategic planning, faculty performance reviews, benchmarking, and priority-area identification — as a governance tool, not only a reporting metric.

Full Pipeline Integration

Monitoring covers the full research pipeline — from funded project approval to published output — ensuring interdisciplinary capacity is tracked before it appears in bibliometric databases.

Strategic Alignment

Priority areas including AI for sustainable development, disaster resilience, sustainable agriculture, and SDG-aligned research reflect the institutional interdisciplinary research agenda, updated annually.
