Professor M. Pınar Mengüç receives the 2018 ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award

Prof. Dr. M. Pınar Mengüç, the Head of Mechanical Engineering Department and the Director of the Center for Energy, Environment, and Economy (CEEE), has been honored with the 2018 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Heat Transfer Memorial Award.  This prestigious award is given to him in recognition of his original and lasting research contributions in radiative heat transfer, as well as in the development of diagnostic tools for particle characterization, nanoscale manufacturing techniques, and nanoscale energy transport. Since 1974, the award has been received by faculty members from the world’s leading universities, including Stanford, MIT, Purdue, California-Berkeley, and Georgia Tech. For the first time, the award has been presented to a faculty member who is based in Turkey.

Prof. Dr. M. Pınar Mengüç’s award was also ranked among the most prestigious awards in the field of Physical Sciences and Engineering by the US National Academies. The award will be presented to Prof. Dr. Pınar Mengüç during the 2018 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in Pittsburgh, USA, from November 9 to 15, 2018.

The Heat Transfer Memorial Award is bestowed on individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of heat transfer through teaching, research, practice and design. Each award is based on achievement through publications, patents or inventions, in an area of heat transfer or through the application of science or art of heat transfer. The award is annually presented in three categories: the science of heat transfer, the art of heat transfer, or the general subject of heat transfer. Prof. Dr. Mengüç has been honored with the Heat Transfer Memorial Award  in the “art category” for the development of devices, techniques, and concepts related to radiative transfer.

The award was established by the Heat Transfer Division at ASME in 1959, and in 1974, it was elevated to a Society award to recognize the achievements of a larger community. To date, only 4 Turkish faculty members, Necati Özışık, Vedat Arpacı, Sadık Kakaç, Yıldız Bayazıtoğlu, have received the Heat Transfer Memorial Award while they work at universities in the USA.

The world’s largest society dedicated to mechanical engineering, ASME is a not-for-profit membership organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment, and skills development across all engineering disciplines, towards the goal of helping the global engineering community develop solutions to benefit lives and livelihoods. Founded in 1880 by a group of leading industrialists, ASME has grown through the decades to include more than 130,000 members in 151 countries.
