The 2nd edition of the TEVITOL-Özyeğin Debate Meeting Hosted by Özyeğin University

The second edition of the Debate Meeting held by TEVITOL Debate Club members was hosted by Özyeğin University on the OzU Çekmeköy Campus between February 21 and 24, drawing  96 student debaters from 24 high schools. Debaters discussed a wide array of hot topics from politics to culture and from art to economics during the event. The debate meeting brought together enthusiastic students who have in-depth knowledge in a specific subject field, and who are keen on  learning more about their areas of interest, offering students a great opportunity to share and exchange their ideas. During the event, Galatasaray High School and Istanbul High School were awarded the first and second prize, respectively.

Teams of 4 from 24 high schools invited by TEVITOL from across Turkey competed in the debate tournament. Each team was coached by a TEVITOL teacher. The teams debated on the issues such as “Individuals may leave the social security system at their own discretion”, “Cartoons should also have homosexual characters”, “Convicts should have the option to accept aggravated imprisonment in exchange of shortened sentences”, During the tournament, the teams were split into two groups, for (thesis) and against (antithesis).  In addition to TEVITOL, the debate tournament also featured  Italian High School, İstanbul High School, İSTEK Foundation Private Bilge Kağan High School, Private Irmak High School, Ankara Gazi Anatolian High School, Private Avcılar Doğa High School, Mardin Nusaybin Anatolian High School, Private Özel Darüşşafaka High School, Private Sezin High School, Private MEF High Schools, Private Cevizlibağ Doğa High School, Private Bostancı Doğa High School, Private Kartal Doğa High School, Private Yakacık Doğa High School, Galatasaray High School, Private Marmara High School, Private Adapazarı Enka Anatolian High School, METU Development Foundation Private High School, Üsküdar American Academy, Private Atacan High School, Private Açı High School, Kabataş High School, Validebağ Anatolian Medical Vocational High School,  and Private Üsküdar Doğa High School.  The first and second prizes were received by Galatasaray High School and  İstanbul High School, respectively.

During the 2nd edition of the Debate Meeting, the best debaters were also awarded. Accordingly, Ozan Adıgüzel from Galatasary High School and Can Haldenbilen from Italian High School shared the first prize for the best debater, while Arda Mert Şehan from Galatasaray High School and  Lara Karadeniz from Istanbul High School received the second and third prize, respectively.

TEVITOL had held the first edition of the Debate Meeting in November 2011 in a quest to support the TEVITOL Debate Club’s efforts to organize a different tournament in Turkey, after seeing the lack of enough number of debate tournaments and current deficiencies of the existing tournaments
