English Language Proficiency Requirement

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH-MEDIUM PROGRAMS

Students must satisfy the English language proficiency requirement before they can begin their undergraduate studies in a program whose medium of instruction is English. The language proficiency of newly enrolled students is measured by the School of Languages at the start of the academic year in which they first register at the University, through:

• Phase 1 – English Placement Test (PLACEMENT), and
• Phase 2 – English Proficiency Examination (TRACE)

English Placement Test (PLACEMENT)

This is the examination administered to determine students' English level. Students who score at least 60 out of 100 on the English Placement Test earn the right to sit the English Proficiency Examination.

Students who do not take the exam, or who fail to obtain the required score, are placed in the English Preparatory Program. The level at which students will begin their studies in the English Preparatory Program is determined by the School of Languages based on the exam results. No make-up examination is held for this test. For students who do not take the exam on the announced date, their level in the Preparatory Program is determined by the School of Languages.

English Proficiency Examination (TRACE)

This is the examination administered to determine the proficiency of students who have earned the right to sit the English Proficiency Examination. Students who score at least 65 out of 100 on the English Proficiency Examination begin their undergraduate diploma program.

Students who do not take the exam, or who fail to obtain the required score, continue at the level determined for them in the English Preparatory Program. No make-up examination is held for this test. The English Proficiency Examination result is valid for two years from the date the exam was taken.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY IN TURKISH-MEDIUM PROGRAMS

Students enrolled in undergraduate programs whose medium of instruction is Turkish may sit the English language proficiency exams in order to benefit from the following:

a) Attending the optional English Preparatory Program

b) Being exempted from ENG-coded courses taught in the undergraduate diploma program

c) Being able to take English-medium courses offered by the University's undergraduate programs

• The English Preparatory Program is optional for undergraduate diploma programs whose medium of instruction is Turkish. Students who wish to attend the optional Preparatory Program must apply to Student Services at the time of University enrollment and sit the English language proficiency exams. Further procedures are carried out based on the students' exam results. The optional preparatory class may be attended for at most one year. Students who do not successfully complete the Preparatory Program within one year may not continue in the Preparatory Program for a second year and must begin their undergraduate program studies.
• Exemption from ENG-coded courses, based on students' English Placement and English Proficiency exam results, is carried out according to the implementation principles determined by the Senate.
• Students who have scored at least 65 on the English Proficiency Examination, or who have met any one of the English Preparatory Program exemption conditions, may register for courses taught in English.

EXEMPTION FROM THE ENGLISH PREPARATORY PROGRAM

Students who satisfy the following conditions are exempted from the English Preparatory Program and begin their undergraduate program studies:

• Having attended, for at least the last three years, a secondary education institution where the medium of instruction was English, located in a country whose native or official language is English, and having graduated from that institution within at most the last two academic years prior to the date of enrollment at the University.
• Having met the minimum requirements set for one of the national and/or international English proficiency exams whose equivalency is recognized by the Council of Higher Education and the Senate, as listed below. For exam results to be taken into consideration, the original exam result documents must be submitted, provided the exam's own validity period (counted from the date the exam was taken) has not expired.
• Having obtained a passing score on the English Proficiency Examination administered by the School of Languages within at most the last two academic years prior to the date the exam was taken.
• Having graduated from, or withdrawn from, an English-medium undergraduate program at Özyeğin University within at most the last two academic years.
