July - August 2018: Summer School Design Studio
We conducted the final jury for IDE202-301 design studios led by visiting professor John Arbak between July 14 - August 7 within the scope of 2018-2019 Academic Semester Summer Term. During the project, students focused on hand mixers and juicers. Visits to Le Cordon Bleu and Openfab were made during research and prototyping phases respectively.

July 2018: Workshop at Özyeğin University Summer School for High School Students
As part of Özyeğin University Summer School for High School Students Architecture and Design module, research assistants Burak Taşdizen and Pelin Günay conducted a workshop in which the participants traced the basic design principles on objects and the built environment. The workshop started with a presentation on basic design principles, which was followed by participants' in-situ observation and documentation on campus. The final outcomes were posters showcasing participants photographs.
July 2018: OzU ID students become finalists at MOSDER.
OzU ID students Defne Tural and Zeynep Aldemir become finalists with their project "Wave" at MOSDER's 14th National Home Furniture Design Competition's Complementary Furniture and Accessories category. Wave is inspired by the contrast and harmony of the waves, and offers users to manage their storage spaces by bringing together various use scenarios. July 2018: Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen participated at "Field Notebook as a Research Tool/Apparatus" Workshop
Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen participated at "Field Notebook as a Research Tool/Apparatus" held between July 2-8 at Gümüşlük Akademisi. At the workshop, in which participants of various backgrounds such as design, anthropology, archeology, art history, architecture and urban planning came together, a new approach to field research was articulated and the field notebook was scrutinized. The workshop ended with an exhibition showcasing the field notebooks of workshop participants. Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen's experiment on creating a transparent, accessible and co-authored field notebook could be viewed here  https://www.instagram.com/thefieldnotebook.
 
June 2018: IDE100 Research Internship
As part of IDE100 Research Internship course, 1st year Industrial Design students explored Adobe Illustrator for two weeks. The internship was led by research assistants Burak Taşdizen and Pelin Günay. For other works → ide100.tumblr.com.
 
May 2018: Second cohort of graduates from OzU ID!
Following the end of 2017-18 Academic Year Spring Term, our department celebrates the graduation of its second cohort of students! We congratulate our graduates and wish them success in their professional lives.
May 2018: OzU ID Students at Norddesign 2018!
The paper entitled "Adaptation to Internet-based Services by Seniors in Turkey" by our students Melike Balkaya, Güney Güner and Nisan Kuzuluk has been accepted for presentation at the Norddesign 2018 conference organized by Linköping University under the theme of design in the era of digitalization. Our students will present their research at this international conference, which will take place between 14-17 August 2018. The paper was developed within the scope of Design Ethnography course delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Işıl Oygür.

March 2018: TÜYAP Toy Fair 2018 Visit
As part of IDE301-302-401 studio courses, a visit to TÜYAP Toy Fair 2018 was conducted by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali O. İlhan and Inst. Gamze Güven. 
February 2018: Design Thinking Workshop
On February 23, 2018, within the scope of the course SEC301 Sectoral Solutions, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali O. İlhan and Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen together with students of business administration and engineering backgrounds, explored potential problems the industry could face due to Industry 4.0 Transition and speculated over potential methods with which to tackle these problems using design thinking methodology.

December 2017: Field Trip to Bocchi
As part of IDE201 Design Studio I course Toilette Alla Turca project, a field trip to Bocchi was conducted by Prof. Dr. Alpay Er, Inst. Gamze Güven and Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen. During the visit, students observed the sanitary ware production process.
December 2017: Economies of Design: Lecture by Guy Julier
Guy Julier, Professor of Design Culture at University of Brighton, became our guest at ATÖLYE, and discussed his recently published book "Economies of Design."
November 2017: Field Trip to Erba Karavan
As part of IDE301-02 Design Studio III-IV studio courses, a field trip to Erba Karavan was conducted by Assist. Prof. Dr. Işıl Oygür and Assist. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Karapars. During the visit, students observed the caravan production process.
November 2017: Hakan Diniz Talk
Product designer Hakan Diniz of Studio HDD was our guest as part of the course IDE301 Design Studio III. 
November 2017: Field Trip to Hakan Metal

As part of of IDE201 Design Studio I course, a field trip to Hakan Metal was conducted by Inst. Gamze Güven and Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen. During the visit, an orientation on handle production technology was made. 

November 2017: Design Week Turkey 2017 "Potentials of Design"
The time has come for the second year of Design Week Turkey, "Potentials of Design". It will be a five-day long journey of design talks and panels. Domestic and foreigner designers will be gathering to discuss the "Potentials of Design", there will also be a 'Finland Day' as it is the guest country.  We will be taking our place at Lütfi Kırdar International Convention & Exhibition Center, Rumeli Hall, Stand U-15.  

 

October 2017: Department Head Prof. Alpay Er elected to the Executive Board of the World Design Organization for a Third Time.
Our Department Head Prof. Alpay Er has been elected to the Executive Board of the World Design Organization (WDO) for a third time (for 2017-2019) during the 30th general assembly meeting in Turin, Italy.

October 2017: Rethinking food workshop: "The creativity of entrepreneurship"
British Council and TUBITAK held a workshop on design entrepreneurship under the coordination of Professor Emeritus Anne Douglas (Robert Gordon University) and Professor Alpay Er (Ozyegin University). By the end of a four-day interdisciplinary workshop with participants from different countries and professional backgrounds, several foodrelated design solutions were presented to a jury of professional designers.  

October 2017: On Ethnographic Methodology
Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen presented the ethnographic methodology that he followed during his master's thesis to industrial design and visual communication design students at Istanbul Medipol University within the scope of the course "Research for Product Design".
September 2017: Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen successfully defends his thesis. 
As part of his graduate studies, Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen has succesfully defended his thesis entitled "Politics of the Knitting Pattern: Ethnography of Knitting Practice and a Women's Knitting Community". The study focuses on how knitting practitioners organize around knitting know-how and knitting patterns, which exchanges they have with regard to knitting know-how and knitting patterns and what meanings they associate to these exchanges. 
September 2017: Growth or Decline? A Longitudinal Analysis of Factors Affecting the Institutional Trajectories of Five Design Disciplines in the United States 
The article "Growth or Decline? A Longitudinal Analysis of Factors Affecting the Institutional Trajectories of Five Design Disciplines in the United States" by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali O. İlhan got published in She Ji: The Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation. Paper available for download here.

September 2017: Prof. Dr. Alpay Er receives a prestigious award from Finnish President!
Department Head Prof.Dr. Alpay Er is bestowed with "Suomen Leijonan Iluokanritarimerkki" (Knight, First Class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland) by President of Finland, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of bilateral relations and cooperation between Finland and Turkey in the field of design. Prof.Dr. Alpay Er will be receiving his awardfromMs. Paivi KAIRAMO, Ambassador of Finland, during aceremony to be held in Istanbul on September21,2017 in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Finland’s Declaration of Independence.

August 2017: OzU ID students receive design award!
OzU ID students Aybüke Göler and Koral Oral have received the third place with their design "Keyf-i Çay" in 6th Doğal Taş Tasarım Yarışması held by IMIB. The project was developed within the scope of Design as Creative Problem Solving course led by Inst. Alayça Erözçelik during 2016-17 Spring semester.

July 2017: Beyond its function
As part of Özyeğin University Summer School for High School Students Architecture and Design module, "beyond its function" workshop was conducted to gain insight into, document and present human-product interaction. During the workshop, participants inquired the imagined uses, affordances and alternative uses of products on campus. The workshop was conducted by Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen and Res. Asst. Call for participants: Rethinking food: The creativity of entrepreneurship
Under the Researcher Links scheme offered within the Newton Fund, theBritish Council and TUBITAK will be holding a four-day workshop on design entrepreneurship in Istanbul, on 3-6 October 2017. The workshop is being coordinated by Professor Anne Douglas (Robert Gordon University) and Professor Alpay Er (Ozyegin University) and will have contributions from other leading researchers including Professor Ozlem Er (Istanbul Technical University), Chris Fremantle (Robert Gordon University), Dr Nil Gulari (Robert Gordon University) and Dr Isil Oygur (Ozyegin University). We are now inviting Early Career Researchers (completed their PhD within the last 10 years or equivalent research experience) from the UK or Turkey to apply to attend this workshop. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Newton Researcher Links programme. June 2017: IDE100 Research Internship
As part of IDE100 Research Internshipcourse,first year Industrial Design students made a hands-on introduction to Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator programs. Throughout the two-week internship program, participants designed product design presentation boards and stickers by using digital media. The internship was led by Asst. Prof.Dr. Ali O İlhan, Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen and Res. Asst. Pelin Günay.

May 2017: Fiat Hackathon
Fiat Customer Experience Hackathon got finalized after teams’ presentations to the jury on May 14, 2017. One of our senior year student’s, Ekmel Ayar, was one of the mentors at the hackathon. Eleven teams conducted research on customer experience and prototyped ideas at this two and a half days’ event. Further information on the Hackathon is available at Fiat’s website.  

Gökçeada Design Workshop 2017: Reduction/Reproduction
We are now accepting applications for the fourth Gökçeada Design Workshop. The workshop has been conducted since 2014 by ÖzÜ Faculty of Architecture and Design and Istanbul Institute of Design. Prof. Dr. Alpay Er in Italy
Our department head, Prof. Dr. Alpay Er, will spend rest of the Spring 2017 semester in Napoli, Italy. He will continue his academic studies at Universita degli Studi della Campania until Fall 2017 semester. We are looking forward to his return. 

March 2017: Very Skilled People Workshops
As part of "Very Skilled People" workshop series, sewing and knitting workshops took place in ÖzÜ Department of Industrial Design. The workshops are led by designer-amateur Handan Ergün of Nahıl Dükkan and Sinem Sayar within the scope of "Designer-self and Amateur-other" research project of Research Assistant Burak Taşdizen. 14 students of ÖzÜ Faculty of Architecture and Design and Asst. Prof. Dr. Semra Tokay participated at the workshop. During the workshops, the participants experimented with hand sewing, machine sewing and hand knitting. March 2017: I'm Design Turkey
The third annual i’m design furniture workshop took place between February 28 and March 3. This year, Özyeğin University Department of Industrial Design and Domus Academy (Italy) collaborated as workshop coordinators. 38 industrial design students from 13 Turkish universities participated in the event. Students worked as teams and designed a siting unit using parametric design. Prototypes were presented during the i’m design symposium that took place on March 4, 2017. December 2016: Immoral Objects: A Psychogeography of Urban Transformation in Ulus
The article "Immoral Objects: A Psychogeography of Urban Transformation in Ulus" a psychogeography tracing the current urban transformation in Ulus, Ankara through objects, co-written by Research Assistant Burak Taşdizen and Harun Kaygan of METU Department of Industrial Design, got published in Journal of Ankara Studies! December 2016: DesignUM visit
Students of IDE301 and IDE202 studio courses visited DesignUM in order to learn from DesignUM team and get feedback on their current design project.
December 2016: "Design, Music and Acoustics" panel
Inst. Ali Gökkurt attended the panel discussion "Design, Music and Acoustics" which is organized Okan University Design Community on 19th of December. The other attendants were Arch. Cem Sorguç and MSc. Arch. Ezgi Türk Gürkan.
November 2016: VIKO visit
Asasuppotive event for Materials and Manufacturing Technologies course, Inst. Ali Gökkurt and his students visited the industrial facilities of VIKO by Panasonic. In the context of the factory trip, which took placeinguidance of Electronics R&D department manager Oktay Nak and corporate communication executive İlker Çelik, the students gottheoppotunity to experience true industrial manufacturing processes. Moreover, marketing director Aysel Özaltınok andhumanresouces specialist Çiğdem Dinçer sincerely shared their experiences on product design & development and internship applications, respectively, intending to provide a new perspective to the students regarding their future career objectives.

As part of the Design Summit 16 that took place in Bursa,aur department head, Prof.Dr. AlpayEr, participated in the Design Awards and Competitions Discussion Panel together Tapani Hyvönen and Tahsin Emre Eke.
November 2016: Sketching and Quick Visualization Workshop
Two faculty members from ÖzÜ School of Architecture and Design, Ali O. İlhan and İlker F. Özorhon conducted a workshop on November 26 at Bomonti Ada. The workshop aimed to introduce tosketchingtehniques specific for architecture, space and product design.

Prof.Dr. Alpay Er served as a speaker at Good Design İzmir that took place 17-19 November 2016.

Ayşe Köksal conducted a series of seminars for Akbank Sanat. This seminar series tried to discuss the networkofart world in tandem with the museum.
October 2016: Empowering Women Through Design Seminar
Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen moderated the panel discussion entitled “Multidisciplinary Approaches” at the Empowering Women Through Design Seminar held at SALT Galata as part of 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial. During the seminar, Taşdizen talked on the product outcomes of their collaboration with TAK (Design Atelier Kadıkoy), KEDV (Foundation for the Support of Women’s Work) and Nahıl Dükkan.
 October 2016: Design Week Turkey 
Department students together with Res. Asst. Burak Taşdizen visited Design Week Turkey organized at Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Center.
September 2016: On Sustainability
Department Head Prof.Dr. Alpay Er talked on the aims and gains of annual “Gökçeada/İmroz Design Workshops” during the panel “On Sustainability” at Krank Art Gallery. Workshop outcomes were exhibited throughout and after the panel.
June 2016: World Design Talks Series 1
The Department in collaboration with World Design Organization (formerly known as ICSID), of which the Department Head Prof. Alpay Er is a member, hosts the first World Design Talks under the theme of “Urban Mobility: Traffic Congestion” at ATÖLYE İstanbul.
May 2016: Harvard Business Review Turkey

March 2016: Korkmaz Çelik visit
Within the context of IDE 202 Design Studio II course, the factory trip to Korkmaz Çelik stainless steel kitchen goods and electrical home appliancesmanufacturingfacilities, took place with the guidance of factory manager Levent Dayan. While touring the plant, our students had the opportunity to observe the manufacturing technologies in-situ, as well as took the advantage of learning about the sectoral experiences ofMr. Dayan.
November 2015: Şişecam ve Uludağ Gazoz visit
Afieldtrip was conducted to Şişecam Yenişehir manufacturing facilities and Uludağ Gazoz Yenice facilities with the supervision of Yusuf Coşkun.
