Associate Prof. Berna Zengin Arslan’s Book "Women Engineers in Turkey: Gender, Technology, Education and Professional Life" Translated into 6 Languages
Our Faculty of Social Sciences member Associate Prof. Berna Zengin’s book “Women Engineers in Turkey: Gender, Technology, Education and Professional Life” has been translated into 6 languages. The book explores why women are underrepresented in the fields of science and technology in Turkey, highlighting the fact that women have numbered relatively higher percentages in these fields in Turkey than the West for a long period of time. Zengin also observes that although the distribution of woman and men in certain fields such as Environmental and Food Engineering is balanced, the ratio of men is much higher in the fields such as Mechanical and Civil Engineering, which shows that these areas are categorized as feminine or masculine. While analyzing how women engineers construct their professional identities in their academic and professional lives, the author further explains how - in their choices and practices of engineering - women negotiate with the masculine culture of technology and gender discourses of various institutions, such as the state, family and school.
