Horizon Europe Project with Assistant Prof. Susan Beth Rottmann from Özyeğin University as a Researcher Receives Support from European Commission

The multi-disciplinary project GAPs (De-centring the Study of Migrant Returns and Readmission Policies in Europe and Beyond), with Assistant Prof. Susan Beth Rottmann, a faculty member at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Özyeğin University, as one of the researchers, has been awarded a three-year grant from the European Commission. The grant has been conferred by the European Commission within the scope of the Horizon Europe Project, which was launched as a 7-year scientific research initiative of the EU in 2021 as the continuation of Horizon 2020, the new R&D and Innovation Program of the European Union (EU). Through this grant, the project GAP aims to conduct a comprehensive and multidisciplinary study on the drivers of return policies in Europe and beyond as well as the barriers and enablers in international cooperation concerning returns.

The interdisciplinary project will be undertaken in cooperation with 17 consortium organizations and institutions in 12 countries, including Turkey, across four continents. The project will be carried out from 2023 through 2026 and will be coordinated jointly by Uppsala University and Bonn International Center for Conflict Studies. Representing Özyeğin University as the lead researcher in the Turkish leg of the project, Assistant Prof. Susan Beth Rottmann will be working with Dr. Maissam Nimer from the Faculty of Political Sciences at Istanbul University. The main objectives of Rottmann and her team’s research include modeling return routes by taking into account the movements of migrants and their settlement practices; determining the role of diaspora organizations and transnational networks in migration practices, and identifying the actions immigrants take to achieve their goals. Previously, Dr. Rottmann also served as lead researcher/coordinator in the Horizon 2020 project “RESPOND - Multilevel Governance of Mass Migration in Europe and Beyond” between 2017 and 2021.
