Özyeğin University Natural and Mathematical Sciences Department Faculty Member Dr. Mine Tekman Delivers the Opening Lecture at the Sardinia 2023 Conference

Assistant Prof. Mine Tekman from the Natural and Mathematical Sciences at Özyeğin University served as the opening speaker at the "Sardinia 2023 19th International Symposium on Waste Management and Sustainable Landfilling”. Organized biennially, the Sardinia Conference is renowned as one of the most prestigious conferences in the world in the field of waste management. Drawing from the findings of her ongoing research since 2015, Assistant Prof. Mine Tekman delivered a speech titled "Anthropogenic Debris in the Arctic” on October 9. In her address, Assistant Prof. Mine Tekman emphasized that, contrary to popular belief, plastic pollution is a serious issue in the sparsely populated Arctic. Assistant Prof. Tekman highlighted that direct land-based inputs are only one part of the problem, emphasizing that plastic waste transported by ship traffic or ocean currents accumulates in the Arctic, contributing to the intensive microplastic pollution within the glaciers.
