Assistant Prof. Mohammed Elamassie Invited to the IEEE Distinguished Lecture Series
Dr. Mohammed Elamassie, a faculty member at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department and the Executive Co-Director of the Center of Excellence for Optical Wireless Communications Technologies (OKATEM) at Özyeğin University, was invited to the Distinguished Lecture Seminars organized jointly by the IEEE Systems Council Chapter and the IEEE Student Branch at California State University, Long Beach (IEEE CSULB). The event was held online on May 21, 2024, at 23:00 Türkiye time. Dr. Elamassie delivered a speech titled “Towards Airborne Connectivity: Multi-Layered Networks for Optical Backhaul.”
In his speech, Dr. Elamassie discussed the deployment of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), which encompass a range of technologies such as High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPSs), Satellites, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), as a solution to overcome current challenges in accessing reliable and secure internet connection worldwide. Dr. Elamassie also explored new methods of seamlessly integrating aerial networks to ground networks using infrared signals known as free-space optical (FSO) links.
The IEEE is a 140-year-old non-profit international association dedicated to advancing innovation and technological excellence.
