English Placement Test

The English Placement Test is used to evaluate the English proficiency of newly admitted Özyeğin University students and to determine whether they are eligible to take the TRACE (Test of Readiness for Academic English).

Students who do not succeed in the Placement Test will be placed into the appropriate level (Level 1 (Foundation Development 1), Level 2 (Foundation Development 2) or Level 3 (Academic Readiness 1) based on their test results.

Students who succeed in the Placement Test become eligible to take the TRACE. Students who do not pass the TRACE will be placed into Level 4 (Academic Readiness 2). Students who pass the TRACE become eligible to begin the first year of their undergraduate programmes.

Content of the Placement Test

There are 70 multiple-choice questions in the Placement Test. 

The test takes 50 minutes.

It tests grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

To obtain reliable results and determine your English level accurately, it is important that you exhibit realistic performance that reflects your level of English in the test. That’s why you may skip a question when you don’t know the answer.

Since an optical form will be used in the exam, it is necessary to bring a pencil and an eraser.

Sample Questions

Sample question 1: Grammar 
The grammar questions represent a conversation between two people or a single sentence completion. For each question, students will choose a word or phrase that best completes the sentence. 

Anne: What's your name?

Sample question 2:  Reading Comprehension

Students will choose the best expression to complete the statement according to the text given.  

After a few months of living in Singapore, Sarah realized that lifestyle and cultural differences were huge, and she regretted making a prompt decision to change her job and moving from London to there too quickly.

According to the text , ________.

1. Sarah is not happy about her new job.
2. Sarah didn’t spend enough time in London to make the correct decision.
3. Sarah’s quick decision to move made her regretful about her new location.
4. Sarah wishes that she had lived in Singapore more to learn about the differences.
