Message from the Dean

The word “university” means "community of teachers and scholars” (“universitas magistrorum et scholarium”) in medieval Latin. From the community within the university, universalist thought was born. In other words, universities are the places where universal thinking is shaped.

Universities are the best places to redress the shortcomings that have been accumulated since primary education, close the gaps in the education system, and accelerate the development of students. These are the years in which students will transform themselves in full awareness of this fact as they also transform their surroundings. These are the periods in students’ lives in which they will develop the skills to guide them while living in society. These are the years in which students will not only acquire academic achievements but also experience personal, social, cultural, physical, and psychological developments. Universities are environments where not obligations but self-assessments prevail, self-discipline is required, and self-regulation and self-control are developed and placed at the forefront.

The Office of the Dean of Students at Özyeğin University was founded to guide and support our students on their transformational journeys. The Office treasures learning by living and experiencing. Embracing a holistic approach to student development with a liberal university environment, the Office aims to serve as a beacon that lights the way for students with all its departments and units.

The Office of the Dean of Students strives to help our students discover their innate desire to learn, and develop their thinking systems through its broad spectrum of support units and activities. The Office attaches great importance to learning life by living with honesty and dignity. The Office helps make life easier for our students, and supports them in finding ways to overcome challenges.

Just like Özyeğin University, the Office of the Dean of Students places cultivating good people who uphold their values, and are beneficial to society at the heart of its activities.

Dear Youth,

As you live your university experience:

Never deviate from the path of reason and honesty.

Be always ready to learn, and teach as you learn.

Your mind, brain, heart, efforts, and values are your most important resources. Have faith that you will take on important roles in history as an individual, and build a better future with these resources. Know that you have the opportunity and the power.

Everything concerning man also concerns science. Science is built upon skepticism. Learn to be skeptical in science. Disciplines are not mechanical. They are not memorized but analyzed. Draw from other disciplines. Let the light of other disciplines shine in your personality.

Improve your communication language, and use it well. Believe in the fact that the most valuable resource and tool to overcome your problems is your “word”.

You can face unfairness anywhere anytime. But as long as your word holds true, you will always triumph. Demands are legitimate, and objection is a way of seeking one’s rights. Never lose heart.

To achieve the goals you set for yourself, familiarize yourself with the units of our Office of the Dean of Students, which places students at the heart of all its activities. Never forget that you will be given the necessary support to change your life. Who knows? Maybe you will become an important instrument in the grand symphony called life. Maybe your life will change in one of these units. Maybe you will come across the venture of your life in these rooms.
