Career Promotion System Recognizing Interdisciplinary Research
Özyeğin University defines the types of activities expected from academic staff, the titles and contract types used in starting work, the levels according to titles and types of activities, and the criteria used in periodic and promotion evaluations with the "Periodic Evaluation and Promotion Directive for Faculty" that it has put into effect as of 2023.
While defining the periodic and promotion evaluation criteria and processes, the University's Strategic Plan targets have been considered, and the University's principles of being transparent, fair, and consistent have been guaranteed with this directive.
The directive consists of six sections, five of which are described below:
- Section 2 defines the types of activities for faculty and the ranks for faculty.
- Section 3 defines the contract types and titles used for faculty.
- Section 4 defines the metrics used for the periodic evaluation and promotion evaluation of faculty, applicable principles for performance evaluations conducted based on these metrics, and the scoring system used in these evaluations.
- Section 5 describes the nature and scope of periodic evaluations of faculty, as well as the formation and working principles of the Faculty Evaluation Boards involved in these evaluations.
- Section 6 describes the nature and scope of promotion evaluations of faculty; as well as the formation and working principles of the University Promotion Committee involved in these evaluations, and the details of the promotion process.
Performance Evaluation Metrics for Faculty
The activities of faculty members are evaluated separately under the criteria of Research, Teaching, Service, and Social Impact.
There are four main metrics of Research, Teaching, Service, and Social Impact, with a total of 16 sub-metrics thereunder, applicable to the promotion to associate professorship and full professorship at Ozyeğin University.
- The Research metric has four sub-metrics: Publications, Citations, Research Projects, and Research Awards.
- The Teaching metric has four sub-metrics: Courses, Thesis Advising, Other Teaching Activities, and Teaching Awards.
- The Service metric has four sub-metrics: Permanent Duties, Temporary Duties, Other Duties, External Service and Service Awards.
- The Social Impact metric has four sub-metrics: External Service, Application, Outreach Activities, and Social Impact Awards.
Within the scope of the “Application” subcriterion under the Social Impact criterion, “interdisciplinarity” is included among the contribution components of the ÖzÜ approach. The indicators evaluated within this scope are “The Number of Interdisciplinary Publications” and “The Number of Interdisciplinary Projects” The table for the “Application” criterion is given below:

Özyeğin University brings together the interdisciplinary approach and sustainability focus with the fundamental and applied research it conducts, and addresses the potential contribution of interdisciplinary research and collaboration to sustainability within a broad framework.
In this context, “interdisciplinarity” and “sustainability” criteria are evaluated jointly in the “Periodic Evaluation and Promotion Directive for Faculty”.
