Internship Procedure for the Undergraduate International Relations Program at Özyeğin University

You can contact the email account cigdem.guler@ozyegin.edu.tr to submit your internship documents.

You can contact irinternship@ozyegin.edu.tr for your questions regarding the internship and for your appointment demands with the internship coordinator professors.

The primary purpose of the compulsory internship course in the International Relations program of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Özyeğin University is to integrate and support the theoretical and practical knowledge learned during undergraduate education with field experience. With the internship, students will have the opportunity to gain awareness about an applied or research area of international relations, and to experience the transformation of theoretical knowledge into practice. Another purpose of the internship is to help students gain work experience in their fields and develop their ability to take responsibility.

In order to successfully graduate from Özyeğin University's International Relations program, students must complete an internship for 20 working days. In order to have the internship be properly accounted for, students must enroll in the compulsory internship course IR 390, by first completing the necessary prerequisites (SEC 201, SEC 202 and 60 credits) determined by their program. The student who completes the 20 working days internship successfully and has enrolled in IR 390, receives 6 (ECTS).

Students can enroll in IR 390 and complete their 20-day internship during the summer, spring, or fall semester. Internship days should not coincide or clash with days on which students have other classes, final exams, or composite exams.

All internships must be approved by the internship coordinator. Students who work as part-time research assistants in the research projects of the faculty members of the department, may have that experience counted as their compulsory internship, as long as other requirements are met.

Procedure:

1- After finding an internship, students must have this internship approved by the internship coordinator, by writing to irinternship@ozyegin.edu.tr with the relevant details.

2- After obtaining approval, students must submit pre-internship documents to the faculty secretariat (cigdem.guler@ozyegin.edu.tr) at least 10 working days before the start of the internship. Documents to be submitted to the Department Secretariat are as follows:

For international students, additional documents to be submitted include:

  • Photocopy of their passport's information pages
  • Photocopy of the residence permit
  • Work-permit exemption issued by the Ministry of Labor (if the internship is in Turkey)

Özyeğin University pays the Social Security premium (SGK) for students during the course of their internship. All pre-internship paperwork must be submitted at least 10 working days before the start of the internship, so that SGK payments may start on time. Internships for which matching SGK payments have not been made, will not be counted.

3- After completing the internship, students must submit post-internship documents to the irinternship@ozyegin.edu.tr account within 10 working days of the end of the internship or before the first date of the exam period of the relevant semester (whichever comes first):

  • Internship general report: This should contain a record of the work done throughout the internship. It should provide the theoretical and practical details of a student's internship experience. Students are expected to evaluate how their experience, the knowledge they acquired and the skills they gained were relevant to the undergraduate courses they had taken. They should specify the relevant courses and the themes/concepts they had learnt in those courses, and how they relate to their internship experience. This report can be written at the end of the internship. The report must be typed on a computer (not handwritten) and must be in English. It is expected to be around 2000 words. For detailed information about the Internship Report, please read the Internship Application Principles. Click here to access the Internship Application Principles.
  • Internship diary: A diary in which daily work is recorded. Students must summarize what they did for each day. The date of each day should be clearly specified, e.g. Day 1, Date (d/m/y). It is recommended that students write the Internship Diary on a daily basis throughout the duration of the internship. The internship diary must be typed on a computer (not handwritten) and must be in English. This internship diary, when completed, must be printed and each page must be approved, signed in ink, and stamped, by the official who supervises the student at their place of internship. A scanned version must be submitted within the relevant time period noted above. The original must be submitted to the Research Assistants' office.
  • Internship evaluation form: The internship evaluation form must be completed by the official who has supervised the student's work during the internship, specified in the internship information form submitted previously, and sent by that official (not the student) directly to irinternship@ozyegin.edu.tr. When sending this e-mail, the official should not cc the student. To get the internship evaluation form, please click Here.

In case of any changes to the internship dates or any other aspect of the internship, the student is obligated to inform the Internship coordinator - irinternship@ozyegin.edu.tr
