What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy, in its most general definition, is the use of art when people express themselves and communicate with others. Art therapy is used as an alternative therapy method, especially for people who have difficulties in verbal communication. It is also very effective and enjoyable for those who do not have verbal communication problems. In this form of therapy, artistic material is used and the inner world of the person is reflected outside. All senses such as hearing, sight, touch and are used as a means of transmission in this therapy technique. The aim in art therapy is to make art, not to produce an artistic product. The important thing is to express emotions through art.

So what's the difference between Art Therapy and Art Activity?

Art therapy does not require talent in any field. You don't need to draw well or have a musical ear. How to make art during therapy is not explained. Specific rules and obligations are not given for the development of production or activity. So, this is not a painting class or a drawing class.
Participants are not judged by an aesthetic taste and personal comments are not made on the works. For example, the following questions are asked: Do you want to tell what feelings are on the paper? And with these questions, the person finds a way to explain, convey and express himself. One of the differences between art therapy and art activity is that art therapy is structured. In other words, an expert psychologist gives the application. Specialist gives instructions, what to do, which materials to use, which art branch to use is predetermined.
In art therapy sessions, the person opens himself as much as he wants, no pressure is puts on him, he conveys his own feelings if he wants to share.

So Why Art Therapy?

  • Art therapy creates a safe zone between the therapist and the client through a third zone, the art object. The art object is the transitional object between the client and the therapist. At this point, the picture acts as a bridge in communication with the other person.
  • Art therapy helps us focus on the here and now.
  • Art therapy is also a creative production process. The thing that provides relief in this production process is the production process itself, rather than creating a quality work.
  • With art therapy, the person can become aware of the situations that he subconsciously pushes, suppresses and also affects his behaviour.
  • The artistic production made during the therapy session allows us to discover ourselves with love and inspiration.
