At the end of this level, students will be able to …

• understand the main points and key factual details of clearly structured spoken texts on familiar everyday and general topics, provided that the speech is clearly articulated in standard language with a familiar accent. Students can take simple notes on the main points and important information in straightforward talks.

• give connected descriptions, provide factual information, and express opinions supported by simple reasons and examples on familiar and general topics. Students can communicate with increasing confidence in routine and some less predictable situations by initiating, maintaining, and closing short interactions. Their speech is generally understandable despite pauses, hesitation, and occasional breakdowns in communication.

• read straightforward and clearly structured texts on familiar and general topics and identify their main points and key factual details. Students can follow the organisation of a text and locate relevant information, although they may require some guidance when texts contain less familiar language or ideas.

• write connected and basically-organized paragraphs on familiar and general topics by linking ideas logically and using an expanding range of vocabulary and grammatical structures. Students can describe experiences and processes, compare people, places, objects, or situations, and express opinions supported by relevant reasons and examples.
