At the end of this level, students will be able to …

• understand the main ideas, arguments, and important details of clearly structured spoken texts on a range of general and academic topics, provided that standard language is used. Students can follow factual, descriptive, and argumentative talks and take organised notes on their main ideas and relevant supporting information.

• give coherent and well-organised descriptions, explanations, and short presentations on general and academic topics. Students can communicate with reasonable fluency and confidence, compare alternatives, justify viewpoints, and express and support opinions using relevant reasons and examples. They can initiate, maintain, and conclude interactions in both prepared and less predictable situations.

• read straightforward factual, descriptive, and argumentative texts on general and academic topics, identify main ideas, arguments, and supporting details, and recognise common patterns of organisation. Students can locate, select, and interpret relevant information with increasing independence.

• produce coherent and well-organised paragraphs and short academic texts, such as reports, reviews, essays, and summaries. Students can develop and support ideas using relevant reasons, examples, and information; paraphrase and summarise source texts; and demonstrate increasing control of accuracy, cohesion, and coherence.
