At the end of this level, students will be able to …

• understand the main ideas, supporting details, arguments, and implied viewpoints in linguistically and conceptually complex spoken texts on a wide range of concrete and abstract topics encountered in academic, professional, and social contexts. Students can follow extended talks and lectures and take organised notes by selecting and recording relevant information.
• give clear, detailed, fluent, and well-structured talks and presentations on a wide range of general and academic topics for different purposes. Students can interact with a good degree of fluency, spontaneity, and confidence; develop and sustain arguments; respond to questions; and build on or challenge the views of others. Minor hesitation or occasional breakdowns may occur without significantly affecting communication.
• read relatively complex and extended texts on a wide range of general and academic topics with a large degree of independence. Students can identify stated and implied main ideas, supporting details, viewpoints, and arguments; evaluate information and perspectives; and locate, select, interpret, and synthesize relevant information from multiple texts.
• produce clear, detailed, fluent, and well-organized extended texts, including academic paragraphs and essays, that follow academic conventions. Students can develop and evaluate arguments, support claims with relevant reasons and evidence, and synthesize information and arguments from multiple sources through effective paraphrasing and summarizing. Their writing demonstrates appropriate control of organisation, cohesion, coherence, grammatical accuracy, and academic vocabulary.
