  Adaptive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Techniques for Visible Light Communications

Abstract:

Visible light communication (VLC) technology is a promising solution of wireless communication systems in beyond 5G communication networks, which provides low implementation cost, high energy efficiency, and high-speed data transmission. In this thesis, firstly, adaptive transmission technique for unipolar orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) VLC system is proposed. This proposed system is implemented to support three different MIMO modes that enable a set of different modulation sizes. Secondly, we propose a novel optical MIMO scheme, referred to as flexible generalized spatial modulation, for emerging VLC systems. This proposed scheme offers high spectral efficiency compared to the existing schemes. Finally, we proposed an optical OFDM scheme for MIMO VLC systems. This proposed scheme system exploits the conversion of the complex signal into magnitude and wrap-phase in order to decrease the restriction on the number of LEDs.

 

Bio: 

Mohamed Al-Nahhal was born in Sharkia, Egypt. He received the B.Sc. degree (Hons.) in 2013 from the Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. He joined as a research assistant at Communication Theory and Technologies (CT&T) Research Group under the supervision of Prof. Murat Uysal at Ozyegin University, Istanbul, Turkey, since 2017. Currently, he is a teaching assistant at Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Ozyegin University, Istanbul, Turkey. He worked as a radar and surveillance technical engineer at Aiactive Technologies Company, Red Sea, Egypt in 2015. Since 2016, he worked as a teaching assistant at Al Alson Institute, Cairo, Egypt; teaching assistant at BHIE institute, Sharkia, Egypt; researcher in a project which is funded by National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), Giza, Egypt. His research interests include wireless communications, VLC, mmWave, FSO, MIMO, OFDM, and spatial modulation. He served as a reviewer for IEEE journals and conferences as well as OSA and Elsevier journals. He is a student member of IEEE communications society.
