Course Objective:

To train and guide students through the practical fundamental steps of a new business, as an entrepreneur or intrapreneur, from identifying opportunities to testing value propositions or building and validating business models in order to deliver and capture value.

Course Description:

SEC 499 is a class for the curious and the ambitious, for those who are dissatisfied with the status quo and seek to create their own career path. This class takes students through the practical steps of creating a new business, either as an independent entrepreneur or as an intrapreneur working within an established institution. Students learn how to spot opportunities in the marketplace and are shown techniques for how to evaluate and seize those opportunities, or test their ideas in the marketplace with potential customers. This course leans heavily on the instructor’s real-world experiences working with hundreds of technology startups and corporate entrepreneurship programs of leading Turkish corporations. To register for this class a business idea is not required; however, the desire to work, to talk with customers, to go beyond simple readings and assignments is highly recommended.

Learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, the learners are expected to be able to:

• Identify business opportunities via customer problems and needs
• Test business ideas and value propositions with potential customers
• Create customer personas to understand how, when, and why the solution will be used
• Build business models in order to deliver and capture value
• Validate business models in order to deliver and capture value
• Present validated business ideas in order to receive approval or investment
