Mobile Phone Registration
Mobile Phone Registration
Mobile Phone Registration
To register a mobile phone in Turkey, there are specific steps you must follow, especially if you want to use a foreign phone. The process is required because Turkey enforces a mobile phone registration system to prevent the use of unregistered or stolen phones. Here’s how you can register your mobile phone in Turkey:
1. Check If Your Phone is Eligible for Registration
- Foreign Phones: If you’ve brought a phone from abroad, you must register it within 120 days of entering Turkey. After 120 days, the phone will no longer be able to connect to the Turkish mobile network.
- Domestic Phones: If you purchase a phone within Turkey, it’s automatically registered upon purchase.
- Limit: You can only register one phone per year if you are a foreigner. If you have multiple phones, you can register only one during a 12-month period.
2. Requirements for Registration
You’ll need to provide some documentation to register your foreign phone:
- Valid Passport: A valid passport is required to prove your identity and your entry to Turkey. The phone must be registered to your passport.
- Turkish Residence Permit: If you have a residence permit, this is also needed.
- IMEI Number: The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a unique number that identifies your phone. You can find it by dialing #06# on your phone. The IMEI will be displayed on the screen.
- Turkish SIM Card: A Turkish SIM card from a local carrier (e.g., Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom) is required to complete the registration process.
3. Registering the Phone Online
The registration process is done through the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) website. Here’s how:
- Go to the BTK Website: Visit the official BTK website for phone registration: https://www.turkiye.gov.tr (This site is available in Turkish and has an English version).
- Log In: Log in using your e-Government (e-Devlet) account. If you don’t have an e-Devlet account, you can get one by visiting a PTT (Post Office) and applying for an e-Devlet password (it costs around 2 TL).
- Enter IMEI and Passport Information: After logging in, go to the IMEI Registration section and enter your IMEI number, passport details, and Turkish SIM card information. The website will ask you to input these details.
- Pay the Registration Fee: There’s a registration fee that you must pay. The cost is approximately $200 USD (it may vary depending on the exchange rate). You can pay the fee through the BTK website via a bank transfer or credit/debit card.
- Confirm the Registration: After completing the form and payment, you’ll receive a confirmation. The registration process usually takes around 1-2 days, but it can sometimes take up to a week for the system to update.
4. Final Steps
- Once your phone is successfully registered, it will be recognized by Turkish mobile networks. Your phone should start working normally with Turkish networks.
- Keep a receipt or confirmation email of your registration for your records. You may need it in case of issues with your phone or if you need to register another phone in the future.
5. Important Notes
- Only One Phone per Year: As mentioned, you can only register one phone per year in Turkey.
- Deadline: You must register your phone within 120 days of entering the country, or it will not work with Turkish networks after that period.
- Customs Declaration: If you bring in a phone that hasn’t been registered, you may face fines or other issues if you’re caught by customs. Therefore, it's best to register your phone as soon as possible after arrival.
What Happens if You Don’t Register?
If you don’t register your foreign phone within 120 days, your phone will not be able to connect to any mobile network in Turkey. You'll be left without mobile service until it’s registered properly. Additionally, using an unregistered phone could lead to fines or other penalties if you are caught. If you need further assistance with the e-Government portal or payment, let us know.
